it Marrow can improve his body and vital energy, but it cannot make them advance so quickly." The Alchemist fell into thought. "Could Mu'er be a natural prodigy? Was he born to cultivate?" The village headman frowned. "If he were a natural prodigy, why would he possess an ordinary person's physique? A natural prodigy should have a spirit body. And as for resonance between gods and demons, what prodigy could accomplish that?" The Alchemist asked, "Is the resonance between gods and demons in his howl beneficial or harmful?" "I don't know." The village headman continued, "I heard the resonance between gods and demons within his howl. The divine and demonic sounds were battling and slaughtering one another, and the struggle was extremely violent. But whether it is good or bad, I cannot say." The Alchemist's eyes flickered. "The divine and demonic sounds in his howl... Where did they come from?" "I don't know!" The Alchemist developed a headache, and so did the village headman. It had been a long time since either of them had suffered a headache over something they could not understand. But ever since they had taken in Shen Mu, the little boy who had drifted down from upstream, the number of things beyond their comprehension had steadily increased. Night descended, and Hidden Cripple Village soon sank into darkness. Shen Mu slept in the outer room, while Grandma Zhu slept in the inner room. In the middle of the night, the dark demonic music rose unbidden in Shen Mu's mind. Then the divine music began as well. The divine and demonic sounds attacked each other. Before long, the din grew louder and more incessant. Gradually, that resonance between gods and demons transformed within his mind into a struggle between darkness and light. They clashed in a savage battle, and Shen Mu felt as though he had lost all physical form, becoming a soul floating above the conflict between gods and demons, staring blankly down at the darkness and light locked in combat. The place where darkness and light fought resembled the scene he had witnessed in the ruins within the gorge the previous night, only far more magnificent and vast. The darkness was like a multitude of tentacles, piercing the light again and again, while the light erupted with sudden force and swept the darkness away. After a while, Shen Mu finally saw what the light and darkness truly were. Within the darkness were endless demon gods, surging toward the light like a flood. The demonic music was not merely demonic music, but the cries of countless millions of demon gods. The light was the same. An ocean of gods, clad in golden armor, was locked in battle with the demon gods pouring toward them. He was "standing" so high above that the gods and demons below appeared no larger than drops of water, too distant to make out. At first he had thought it was simply a struggle between light and darkness. Now that he could see clearly, he was struck by terror and awe. Shen Mu suddenly awoke, drenched in sweat. He opened his eyes, only to find divine and demonic sounds filling his mind, roaring so loudly that his head seemed ready to split apart. At that moment, the Profound Light Soul-Guarding Pendant on his chest floated gently upward. It drifted to the center of his brow and settled there. Shen Mu felt a clear current pour through him, and the divine and demonic sounds in his mind vanished at once. He sat up abruptly, breathing hard, his heart filled with uncertainty. He had no idea what had happened. After a while, he left the room and went outside, using the dim radiance emitted by the stone statues in the village to examine the jade pendant. Beyond the village lay darkness, and the pendant itself also gave off a faint, shadowy glow. Shen Mu stared at it in a daze, his gaze as dim and distant as the pendant's light. For a long time, he could not tear his eyes away from the tiny piece of jade. Behind him, Grandma Zhu had approached without his noticing. She happened to witness the scene, and
