Chapter 1858 — There Is Definitely Something Wrong
"Mm." Wei Zhao felt not the slightest bit uncomfortable with the young lady's commanding tone. Over this period, he owed her for staying by his side and looking after him; for that kindness alone, Wei Zhao would do everything in his power—even if Gu Pengzhan's problems were enormous, he would spare no effort!
Sometimes Wei Zhao even wondered whether he had a tendency to play the submissive one, or whether he had simply grown used to the young lady's cold exterior and warm heart. Or perhaps... he rather liked it? The moment the thought surfaced, it startled even Wei Zhao himself.
But now was hardly the time for such thoughts; there was something far more important at hand.
Wei Zhao casually pulled every tube and wire from Gu Pengzhan's body, which left Qing Bo sweating profusely. Gu Mengyao and Shen Yushu, however, trusted Wei Zhao completely and showed not a trace of doubt. Qing Bo thought to himself: was he simply too cautious in his old age? He had felt Wei Zhao's miraculous skill with his own body more than once!
Taking hold of Gu Pengzhan's pulse point, Wei Zhao hesitated a moment, then still circulated the first layer of the Xuanyuan Dragon-Taming Art. After all, whether the second layer could heal, whether it would work or bring side effects, Wei Zhao knew nothing of; the first layer, by contrast, he had mastered to the utmost. Wei Zhao decided not to attempt anything he was not sure of.
The damaged parts within Gu Pengzhan's body recovered swiftly under the repair of Wei Zhao's all-purpose true qi. But Gu Pengzhan's injuries were truly too severe to heal in a moment. Wei Zhao went directly into the jade pendant space and, using the same old method, healed Gu Pengzhan without wasting his own true qi...
Meanwhile Gu Mengyao, Shen Yushu, and Qing Bo waited at the side without blinking, fearful of making any sound that might disturb Wei Zhao...
In the blink of an eye the whole night passed. Just as a sliver of dawn appeared in the sky, Wei Zhao released the pulse point at Gu Pengzhan's wrist and let out a faint breath of relief. "Done. There's no problem now!"
Gu Pengzhan's injuries were external, caused by the car accident, with no other complications; once repaired with true qi, there would be no further trouble.
As he spoke, Gu Pengzhan came to, gazing somewhat dazedly at everyone in the sickroom.
"What happened to me?" Gu Pengzhan had not the faintest memory of anything before the accident.
"Mr. Gu, you're all right?" Qing Bo was overjoyed.
"Daddy, it's finally all over..." Gu Mengyao, seeing Gu Pengzhan awake, was deeply moved as well.
"Why am I in the hospital?" Gu Pengzhan was baffled, and even more astonished to see Wei Zhao standing unharmed nearby. Had Wei Zhao not suffered qi deviation? How was he well again? Had he already recovered? And how had he himself ended up in the hospital?
Gu Pengzhan's words left everyone present stunned.
"Mr. Gu, have you... lost your memory?" Qing Bo asked instinctively. It was the only explanation—otherwise why would Gu Pengzhan ask such a question?
"Lost my memory? Why would I lose my memory?" Gu Pengzhan asked, bewildered.
"Did you not... attempt suicide and then end up in the hospital?" Qing Bo said, uncertain and alarmed.
"I attempted suicide? Why would I attempt suicide?" Gu Pengzhan was all the more baffled. "I'm living well—healthy, with a beautiful daughter, and... a fine young man like Xiaoyi, and a friend like you, Li Fu. Why on earth would I attempt suicide?"
"But... your company went bankrupt..." Qing Bo thought to himself that Gu Pengzhan surely had lost his memory—he had even forgotten the bankruptcy.
"Bankruptcy is no reason to attempt suicide." Gu Pengzhan frowned. "When my father was young, he suffered bankruptcy too. Life's great rises and falls are utterly normal—why would I attempt suicide?"
"But..." Qing Bo wanted to ask more, but Wei Zhao cut him off.
"Uncle Chu, you're saying... you did not attempt suicide?" Wei Zhao had keenly sensed something amiss. He had not yet had the chance to ask about the specifics of Gu Pengzhan's bankruptcy, but from his impression of the man, Gu Pengzhan was not the sort to let a company go bankrupt—and even less the sort to attempt suicide over it!
Back then, under the relentless pressure of Xie Guangbo, Jin Gubang, and the others, Gu Pengzhan had fought on through hardship—and now he had attempted suicide?
"Of course not." Gu Pengzhan shook his head.
Qing Bo and Gu Mengyao exchanged a glance, each seeing surprise and suspicion in the other's eyes. If Gu Pengzhan had not attempted suicide, then the car accident before...
Wei Zhao shrugged and looked at Gu Mengyao and Qing Bo, meaning for them to explain; he was not well versed in the details.
Gu Mengyao took out her phone and played An Jianwen's explanation for Gu Pengzhan to hear, while Qing Bo produced the traffic accident liability determination, which clearly stated that Gu Pengzhan had himself driven into the path of a fast-moving vehicle.
"What Yaoyao says is true—the investment was indeed my own choice..." Gu Pengzhan nodded slowly. But after nodding, a flicker of doubt suddenly crossed his eyes. "Still... why did I do such a thing? There was no reason for it. How could I have been so reckless?"
"Mr. Gu, I advised you at the time as well. Perhaps you were too close to the matter, blinded by money, and so..." Qing Bo sighed.
"No..." Wei Zhao frowned at this moment. "There's a problem here. There is definitely something wrong!"
"A problem?" Qing Bo and Gu Mengyao were both startled, and even Gu Pengzhan himself looked at Wei Zhao in surprise.
"This video recording must have been spliced together—something was cut out of the middle." Wei Zhao said, "Careful as the work is, I have a friend who is a computer expert, and I've learned a thing or two from her. I couldn't produce such a thing myself, but I can tell it apart!"
"So then... An Jianwen was lying?" Gu Mengyao was slightly taken aback, and then a flash of anger crossed her eyes.
"Whether he was lying I can't say, but he certainly concealed something." Wei Zhao said, "And Uncle Chu's attitude now is completely different from back then—even being red-eyed with desperation doesn't explain it. Besides, Uncle Chu says he did not attempt suicide. There must be something here that no one knows about!"
"Exactly!" Hearing Wei Zhao's analysis, together with Gu Pengzhan's flat denial of suicide upon waking, Qing Bo too felt there must be something wrong here.
"An Jianwen? Leave him to me." Wei Zhao said, "I'll go take the company back."
"But we have no evidence..." Qing Bo said hesitantly after hearing Wei Zhao's words.
"What do we need evidence for?" Wei Zhao shrugged and smiled slightly. "I only want the company back—not evidence."
