Chapter 1203 — A Certain Measure of Prowess

The Blossom Guardian

Back then, after Kang Zhaoming had thrown her over, Xiaofen had lost all hope; her life was full of darkness, and whether her leg ever got better hardly mattered anymore. But ever since she and Kang Xiaobo fell in love, though Xiaofen never said a word about it, in the small hours of the night she would weep in silence, hating herself!

How foolish she had been! She had let her leg be smashed to pieces, had become a cripple, all for the sake of a vile man. Looking back now, how utterly worthless it seemed; how unworthy she was of Kang Xiaobo! She was no longer a woman of honor, which was shame enough in itself—and her leg had been ruined because of Kang Zhaoming besides. The guilt gnawed at Xiaofen even more deeply.

She truly felt she did not deserve Kang Xiaobo, and blamed herself beyond measure. And the more Kang Xiaobo declared he didn't care, the more despondent Xiaofen became; it had all but turned into an illness of the heart. And now, this very moment, Kang Xiaobo was telling her that there was hope for her leg!

Had anyone else spoken those words, Xiaofen might not have believed them. But it was Wei Zhao who had said them—the head man Kang Xiaobo answered to. Xiaofen believed!

Back then, at Divine Doctor Kang's banquet, Wei Zhao had given her and Kang Xiaobo the courage, for the very first time, to stand up before Kang Zhaoming's family. From that point on, Kang Xiaobo had built a career and a standing step by step, and her own family had gained a house and money—all of it Wei Zhao's gift. The head man of the man she loved.

So now, when Kang Xiaobo broke the good news to her, Xiaofen did not doubt it for an instant, and at once cried out with delight: "Wonderful! Xiaobo, thank the boss for me..."

"Ha, of course—I've already thanked him!" Kang Xiaobo said with a laugh.

Tang Yun's place and Xiaofen's had basically broken ground and been renovated side by side. With Fatty Lai looking after the work, they naturally put in overtime day and night, and the new house was now entirely in order. Not only was every piece of furniture and appliance in place, but even the everyday household goods—pots, pans, bowls and dishes—had all been bought and laid in.

Coming here, Wei Zhao could not help silently praising Fatty Lai: the man certainly got things done.

"Xiao Yi, now that you're here, don't go off. Auntie will cook tonight—it'll be a housewarming, boiling the pot for the first time in the new house!" Mother Tang gazed at Wei Zhao with a smile, growing fonder of him the longer she looked. She was a hundred percent satisfied with this son-in-law of hers. Never mind all the benefits he had brought the family; today alone he had said he could cure Old Tang's illness!

With Tang Jucheng's leg healed, his spirits would naturally improve, and he could go into business alongside Mother Tang; with that, the household's livelihood would pick up too.

"Sure." Wei Zhao did not stand on ceremony. Since he had already made up his mind to be with Tang Yun, there was no point being polite with Mother Tang. Besides, Wei Zhao could see that the more courteous he grew with her, the more uncomfortable she became, taking it as aloofness; better by far to keep things easy and natural.

"That's wonderful! Yunyun, you keep Wei Zhao company while he treats your father and Xiaofen—your mother and I will go to the market and buy something good to eat!" Mother Tang said happily.

Wei Zhao already knew Tang Jucheng's and Xiaofen's legs inside out; he had made a thorough examination of them earlier. All that remained was to use the nerve-stimulating medicinal liquid to repair the nerves. Together with acupuncture, restoring both of them to normal would be no great difficulty.

"Wei Zhao, what do you need me to do?" Tang Yun led Wei Zhao into her father Tang Jucheng's room and asked.

"Nothing. Just watch from the side and see that nobody disturbs me." Wei Zhao smiled, then asked Tang Jucheng, who lay in the bed: "Uncle Tang, are you ready? In a moment I'm going to stimulate the nerves, and it may hurt quite badly."

"That's nothing—call this pain?" Tang Jucheng said carelessly, with a laugh. "I sat through the surgery; what have I got to be afraid of? As long as I can stand up again, I'll endure any hardship. Otherwise, with legs like this every day, I can't do a thing..."

"All right." Wei Zhao nodded, and began treating Tang Jucheng.

"Hiss—" When the silver needle, wet with the medicinal liquid, pierced the acupoint in Tang Jucheng's leg, he could not help sucking in a sharp breath! This was no longer a matter of mere pain; it was excruciating. Nerves, after all, are terribly sensitive—and Wei Zhao was using this nerve-stimulating fluid on the nerves of Tang Jucheng's legs. Tang Jucheng shot bolt upright in the bed, his forehead breaking out in cold sweat.

Seeing her father's state, Tang Yun's heart clenched at once, and she watched Wei Zhao anxiously. Only when she saw that his expression was unchanged did she let out a breath: "Dad, bear with it—don't interfere with Wei Zhao's treatment..."

"All right..." Tang Jucheng gritted his teeth, well aware that flailing about would only hamper Wei Zhao's work.

Wei Zhao smiled faintly. "Uncle Tang, don't get tense. Think of something amusing from the past and you'll ride it out... say, the story of how you courted Auntie when you were young?"

"Heh heh..." At Wei Zhao's words Tang Jucheng could not help laughing, a look of yearning rising over his face as the old days came flooding back.

Tang Yun, however, shot Wei Zhao a glare: the man had no respect for his elders, saying whatever he liked!

"Yunyun, you don't know it, but back then your mother was the flower of the whole factory! And for your old man to have won such a lovely bride—well, I had a certain measure of prowess myself!" Speaking of his proud old exploits, Tang Jucheng hardly felt the pain in his leg anymore.

"Dad!" Hearing her father talk such nonsense, Tang Yun actually blushed.

"Ha, there's nothing to it. You're grown up now and have a sweetheart of your own—what's there to be shy about?" Tang Jucheng laughed heartily, entirely unconcerned. "Only, Yunyun, you're even prettier than your mother was at your age!"

"Dad!" Tang Yun's face went from red to black.

"Why, Uncle Tang, Yunyun is a campus beauty at our school! I won a lovely bride too—I have a certain measure of prowess myself!" Wei Zhao declared, without a shred of modesty.

"What?" Tang Yun was so stunned she nearly lost her footing and toppled to the floor. What kind of talk was this? How had he grown even more frivolous? Her brows shot up, and she was about to order Wei Zhao to hold his tongue and stop spouting nonsense.

But Tang Jucheng burst out laughing: "Aye, you have prowess too—otherwise a girl like Yunyun, who sets her sights exceedingly high, would never have fallen for you so desperately!"

"Dad, when did I ever fall for him desperately?" Tang Yun's eyes went wide, staring at her father in helpless exasperation.

"Last time you got it into your head that Wei Zhao had given you up, didn't you sob yourself sick?" Tang Jucheng said with a laugh.

Tang Yun's face darkened in an instant. How could he just blurt a thing like that out? True, Wei Zhao already knew how heartbroken and wronged she had felt at the time—but knowing was one thing, saying it aloud was quite another. And where was she supposed to put her face?
