Chapter 1155 — Craving Shark Meat Again: "I'll Take It Home and Secretly Wear It for Brother Jianpai to See!" — Shen Yushu's Words Poured a Bottle of Cold Water over An Jianwen's Head

The Blossom Guardian

"Huh?" An Jianwen was stunned for an instant, and then his face changed. Show it to Wei Zhao? Why was this little girl Shen Yushu so partial to Wei Zhao? Even as envy gnawed at him, he could not help nursing a venomous hope: the best thing would be if Shen Yushu played her tricks on Wei Zhao every single day — if she loosed crabs and lobsters on him daily to pinch him to death!

"Give me half — I want some too!" Feng Xiaoxiao said, unwilling to be outdone.

"All right — anyway I'll never manage to wear it all myself!" This time Shen Yushu did not refuse.

An Jianwen's spirits sank a little. He had paid through the nose for that swimsuit, and Wei Zhao had walked off with the windfall — buying something yourself only to never get a look at it really was rotten luck. Still, such a sum meant nothing to An Jianwen now, and with great magnanimity he waved his hand. "Fine — consider them all yours. Let's go play in the sea today, shall we? I'll scoop up some seafood while I'm at it. It's daylight now — whatever you want to eat, just say the word and I'll go catch it for you!"

An Jianwen watched the crabs and the like come crawling up onto the beach, and his heart steadied. In a little while they might very well manage to scoop up big fish and other seafood — at the very least they wouldn't be groping around in the dark the way they had last night!

"Whatever we want to eat, you'll catch it?" Shen Yushu narrowed her eyes slightly and gazed at An Jianwen.

An Jianwen felt a chill at the sight of Shen Yushu's expression. Was this little girl about to cook up some new prank?

"Well, it has to be something the sea actually has, doesn't it? If it isn't out there, I couldn't catch it if I tried!" An Jianwen laughed hollowly, keeping up his joking air.

"Sister Yaoyao and I feel like having shark meat. Go catch some!" Shen Yushu said.

"Huh? Sharks?" At Shen Yushu's words An Jianwen jumped. Good lord — were sharks the sort of thing you could just catch? You'd be bitten to death!

"That's right — we're in the mood for grilled shark meat!" Shen Yushu nodded. "Aren't you the shark-fighter? One punch and you smashed every tooth in a shark's mouth — were you just blowing hot air all along?"

"Huh?" Only now did An Jianwen suddenly remember. The last time he had treated everyone, hoping to show off his courage, he had casually claimed that he had once fought a shark — but that had been pure invention, an out-and-out lie! And now Shen Yushu was actually bringing it up as evidence, which left An Jianwen, for the moment, caught between a rock and a hard place.

Own up to it, and Shen Yushu would certainly make him go catch a shark on the spot; deny it, and he was bound to leave Gu Mengyao with the impression that he was a liar — and then all his face would be gone!

At that thought An Jianwen gritted his teeth and told himself that the shallows might very well hold no sharks; if he never ran into one, he couldn't be blamed. "All right — shark meat it is. Taizao and I will head down into the sea in a moment and catch you a shark! Though if there are no sharks in the shallows, there's nothing we can do about that either. After all, we didn't bring any diving gear — we can't go off into deep water!"

"Never mind that — I've a surefire trick for luring sharks!" Shen Yushu smiled sweetly at An Jianwen. "Slit your finger and let your blood drip into the sea, and the sharks will come swimming right over to you!"

"Gah!" An Jianwen jumped. "That's not such a good idea ..."

"Why not? Are you a coward? Sister Yaoyao doesn't like cowards — she likes brave men!" Shen Yushu looked at An Jianwen, cheering him on. "Be brave. If you want to win Sister Yaoyao's favor, you must be like a warrior: no matter how great the danger, don't lose your nerve. You should believe that Sister Yaoyao is watching from behind you, rooting for you!"

"Is she?" All at once courage and fighting spirit flooded An Jianwen's whole body. He fixed Su Taizao with a blazing gaze. "Taizao — swimsuit on. We're going down into the sea to catch sharks!"

"But ... Brother An, with a build like ours, wouldn't catching sharks be a bit too much for us ...?" Su Taizao asked carefully, his face a picture of misery.

"Stop talking rubbish — move!" An Jianwen, afraid that Gu Mengyao would mock him, grabbed Su Taizao and hauled him off to change into their swimsuits.

"Xiaoshu, isn't this a bit too dangerous? What if An Jianwen and Su Taizao get bitten to death by a shark?" Gu Mengyao did not believe for a moment that An Jianwen could kill any kind of shark. That Wei Zhao could beat a shark to death — she believed that. But An Jianwen ...

"It's fine — haven't you got me?" Shen Yushu said. "Last time I killed a shark outright with a single stone!"

"Heh heh ... and you can still say that?" Gu Mengyao could not hold back her laughter. "What you smashed last time wasn't any shark — it was Gao Xiaofu!"

"Hee hee — you know about that too, Sister Yaoyao?" Shen Yushu's cheeks flushed at once. Quick as she was, she had naturally worked it out afterward: what she had pelted with a stone was no shark, but Gao Xiaofu in disguise — she had merely thought no one knew.

"The shark you killed still had a supermarket price tag on it — how could nobody know?" Gu Mengyao shot Shen Yushu a glare, then turned to Wei Zhao, looking troubled. "Wei Zhao, keep an eye on things in a while — don't let the sharks actually bite An Jianwen to death!"

"All right." Wei Zhao nodded and asked nothing more.

Wei Zhao knew what was in Gu Mengyao's heart. An Jianwen had been nothing more than a childhood playmate to her all along; and though he had soured since, turning into a bad man, she still cherished the old affections — Gu Mengyao could not bring herself to watch him die before her very eyes.

"Sister Yaoyao, why do you still bother with him? Let him drop dead!" Shen Yushu, for her part, did not care in the least.

Before long An Jianwen and Su Taizao had changed into their swimsuits and were ready to go in.

"Yaoyao, Xiaoshu — aren't you coming in to play too?" An Jianwen asked.

"Sister Yaoyao, shall we go?" Shen Yushu turned to look at Gu Mengyao.

Gu Mengyao nodded and turned to Tang Yun and Feng Xiaoxiao. "Shall we all go together?"

"Yes!" Tang Yun nodded. This was her first time playing at the seaside, and everything was so wonderfully new. Songshan City was a city built against the mountains, ringed by peaks with little water, and you had to drive some distance before you reached the shore. The only place by the sea was the amusement park's bungee-jumping attraction — but that was nothing but sheer cliffs, with the sea lying only at their foot, no place for playing at all.

In those days Tang Yun's family had been in straitened circumstances, and with her father gravely ill in bed, there had never been any time to visit the seaside.

At the supermarket, Gu Mengyao and Shen Yushu had bought a whole stack of swimsuits — all of them of the modest sort — and had brought some along for Tang Yun and Feng Xiaoxiao too.

"Yunyun, Xiaoxiao — you two pick first. Which one do you like?" Gu Mengyao held the swimsuits out and laid them before Tang Yun and Feng Xiaoxiao.
