Chapter 1149 — Ghosts Everywhere

The seaside ought to have been safe enough, but it was the dead of night, and what if something unforeseen should happen? The young miss might scold Xiaoshu now and then, but in her heart she still cared for the girl a great deal.

"Yunyun, Xiaoshu's been gone such a long time. Why hasn't she come back?" Gu Mengyao asked, a thread of worry in her voice.

"I know. I hope nothing's happened to her!" Tang Yun was anxious too. She might treat Gu Mengyao and Shen Yushu as rivals in love, but she also counted them good friends! One thing was one thing. If she had ever wished them harm, she would never have called Wei Zhao to save Gu Mengyao back then!

"How about I go out and have a look?" Gu Mengyao said after a moment's hesitation.

"Let me come with you?" Tang Yun made to rise as well.

"No need. I'll go alone. If Xiaoshu and I slip past each other and she comes back first, she'll worry to find the tent empty." Gu Mengyao waved a hand.

"That's true. Then I'll wait here. Be careful!" Tang Yun saw the sense in it and nodded.

Gu Mengyao pushed open the tent flap and stepped out, but she had gone only a few paces when a dark figure came hurtling toward her, shouting as it ran: "A ghost, there's a ghost! Scared me to death!"

It gave Gu Mengyao a violent fright.

Instinctively she let out a shriek: "Ah!"

Su Taizao ran for all he was worth, not daring to look back. What rotten luck, he thought, to go out dressed as a ghost and run smack into a real one! He was done for now. Did his little act count as caricaturing and impersonating a ghost? Had the ghost caught him at it and decided to take it out on him?

Su Taizao ran on, gasping for breath, terrified the ghost would eat him alive!

But he had not gone far when, somewhere just ahead of him, he heard a blood-curdling scream!

Su Taizao instinctively looked up, and there, not far in front of him, stood the white-faced, white-robed female ghost who had been behind him a moment ago, cutting off his path!

"Oh, Mother!" Su Taizao was frightened out of his wits. How could the ghost move that fast? He had not even seen what happened, and she had already shifted herself right in front of him! Then again, she was a ghost; of course she could shift about, and of course she was faster than he was.

Clearly Su Taizao had taken this Gu Mengyao for the Shen Yushu of a moment ago! In the moonlight, in his panic, he could not tell one from the other: white pajamas, white face masks, all alike. The earlier Shen Yushu had not been as tall as Gu Mengyao, but what attention would Su Taizao pay to such details?

He simply assumed that Gu Mengyao was the ghost from before, and his terror mounted beyond all measure. Running blind, he spotted a tent not far ahead, and it was none other than the tent of Gu Mengyao, Shen Yushu, and Tang Yun!

Su Taizao's spirits surged and strength flooded his limbs! He no longer cared about dressing up as a ghost to frighten Gu Mengyao; his only thought now was to reach Gu Mengyao's tent and take shelter there. A grown man, and he no longer cared whether anyone laughed at him. He would rather hide behind three girls!

Gu Mengyao was struck dumb by Su Taizao's behavior as well! She was frightened too; a dark figure charging at her in the middle of the night, no telling what he was about. Anyone would be scared!

But when she heard the man yelling and shouting, she listened closely and recognized the voice: it was Su Taizao! That calmed her, for what was there to fear from Su Taizao? Only, the words he was shouting made no sense at all!

A ghost? Was there a ghost?

What Su Taizao was shouting was a ghost, there's a ghost, that sort of thing. Gu Mengyao instinctively looked past him, straight ahead of herself. Where was any ghost to be seen? There was only Xiaoshu in the distance, waving cheerfully at her!

Shen Yushu came running toward Gu Mengyao, laughing as she ran, doubled over with mirth, so unsteady she could hardly keep her feet.

"Xiaoshu, what kind of ghost trick is this? What was wrong with Su Taizao just now?" Gu Mengyao had no idea why Su Taizao had gone tearing about like a madman, but she sensed at once that Xiaoshu was behind it. Xiaoshu's expression said as much. Otherwise, what was she laughing at?

"Hee hee, Sister Yaoyao, do I look like a female ghost?" And with that, Shen Yushu stuck out her tongue: "Ooooh, I am a ghooost..."

"Pfft!" Gu Mengyao could not help laughing along with her! She finally understood why Su Taizao had run: the poor man had been frightened by Shen Yushu! "No wonder he got even more scared when he saw me. He took me for a female ghost too!"

"Haha, yes! Sister Yaoyao, we really are good sisters. You played along so well!" Shen Yushu nodded, giggling. "I bet Su Taizao thought I could shift through space and floated right up in front of him! Huh? Where is Su Taizao?"

"Oh no, he seems to have run into our tent!" Gu Mengyao started. "He won't frighten Yunyun, will he?"

"Oh? He ran into the tent? Then we're in for a show. I wonder if Sister Yunyun can play along?" Shen Yushu's eyes lit up.

"Play along?" Gu Mengyao blinked.

"Mm-hmm. Now's the perfect chance to find out whether Sister Tang Yun can be a sister to us, whether she can play along with us in the future." Shen Yushu nodded, perfectly serious.

At those words, Gu Mengyao caught a certain something in them! The sister Xiaoshu spoke of probably carried another meaning besides! Gu Mengyao cleared her throat twice. "Xiaoshu, don't talk nonsense. Let's hurry over and look. We mustn't frighten Tang Yun badly!"

At long last Su Taizao ran into Gu Mengyao's tent. He thought: I'm home at last, I'm safe! So he let out a long breath and cried, "Wonderful, I'm home!"

Su Taizao's sudden arrival gave Tang Yun a terrible fright!

If Su Taizao had not spoken, Tang Yun would not have known who he was! The light inside the tent was even dimmer than outside. Tang Yun could not fathom how Su Taizao had suddenly appeared in her tent, and where were Gu Mengyao and Shen Yushu?

Tang Yun stared at Su Taizao in bewilderment. Su Taizao, having caught his breath, lifted his head. He was about to say something when, raising his eyes, he suddenly saw Tang Yun not far in front of him and was frozen on the spot with fright!

"Oh, Mother! How did the ghost get inside the tent?" Su Taizao was aghast. Wasn't this the tent of Gu Mengyao, Shen Yushu, and Tang Yun? Why were none of them here, and a female ghost waiting inside instead? What on earth was going on?
