Chapter 863 — Fooled Him Again — Just as Kang Xiaobo Was About to Refuse, Wei Zhao Spoke First

The Blossom Guardian

"Three hundred thousand! Xiaobo, take it. Since it's your cousin's kind offer, you have no reason to refuse!" As he spoke, Wei Zhao rose without giving him a chance to argue, reached across, and picked up the cash box in front of Kang Zhaoming.

Kang Zhaoming was overjoyed. So Wei Zhao was not as irritating as he had thought. His visit had not been a mere matter of eating and drinking for free; at the crucial moment, he had proved immensely useful! The man was greedy, terribly greedy, but that was just fine. Kang Zhaoming liked greedy people. With such a shameless miser at Kang Xiaobo's side, everything he wanted to accomplish would go much more smoothly.

"Exactly! Brother Lin is right. With this much money, there is no reason to refuse!" Kang Zhaoming chimed in with a beaming smile. He left the unspoken implication of his final words unsaid: take a man's money, and solve his problems.

Kang Xiaobo was stunned by Wei Zhao's actions. Why was Wei Zhao urging him to accept the money? Would that not amount to handing the prescription over to Kang Zhaoming? He looked at Wei Zhao with uncertainty, wanting to ask what was going on, yet afraid that he might disrupt some plan Wei Zhao had in mind.

"Xiaobo, it's only a prescription, isn't it? As the company's vice president, you should have opportunities to come into contact with such core secrets. When the time comes, just give the prescription to your cousin." Wei Zhao gave Kang Xiaobo a meaningful glance before continuing, "As for the source of the raw materials, that may not be so easy to find out. Still, do your best."

"Yes, yes. Let's get the prescription first, and worry about the rest afterward!" Kang Zhaoming did not press the matter. Once he had secured even one thing, he would have evidence that Kang Xiaobo had accepted a bribe. After that, would he not be able to obtain whatever information he wanted?

"The prescription? Naturally, that won't be a problem!" Wei Zhao thumped his chest and promised confidently. "Right, Xiaobo?"

"Well... yes..." Since Wei Zhao had already agreed, how could Kang Xiaobo refuse? He had no idea what Wei Zhao was really planning, but all he could do was play along.

Kang Zhaoming had not expected to achieve his aim so easily, and he was positively delighted. After dinner, he exchanged only a few pleasantries with Kang Xiaobo before arranging that, once Kang Xiaobo had obtained the prescription, he should call him directly.

It was not until they had left the restaurant and Kang Zhaoming and the others were gone that Kang Xiaobo, still carrying the box of money, finally asked in bewilderment, "Chief, what was that all about? They want the prescription. Are we really going to give it to them?"

"Of course we are. Otherwise, they would have spent three hundred thousand for nothing." Wei Zhao smiled. "But there is no need to steal one. I'll simply write one out for you."

With that, Wei Zhao took a promotional leaflet he had casually picked up in the restaurant, turned it over, and wrote a prescription for Kang Xiaobo on the blank side. Then he said, "Here you are. Just call Kang Zhaoming when the time comes."

"What? Is this a genuine prescription?" Kang Xiaobo found it almost impossible to believe. He knew something about Doctor Guan's wound medicine. Word was that its formula differed from Divine Physician Kang's: not only had it reduced the cost, it was even more effective. If Wei Zhao gave that formula to Kang Zhaoming, would that not amount to handing the profits over to someone else?

"It is a genuine prescription," Wei Zhao said with a nod, though a smile tugged at his lips. "But it is the prescription for Divine Physician Kang's Golden Wound Medicine. He already suspects that you know their formula, doesn't he? Perfect. We can use this to fool him."

"The formula for Divine Physician Kang's Golden Wound Medicine? Chief, how did you get it?" Kang Xiaobo stared at him in astonishment.

"I've seen Divine Physician Kang's Golden Wound Medicine. This should be the original formula. It's just that many of the ingredients are extremely expensive, driving the cost too high, so I replaced a few of them. That not only cut the cost, it improved the medicine's efficacy as well." Wei Zhao shrugged. "Now we're simply returning the old formula to them. They already had it to begin with, so wasn't selling it to them for three hundred thousand a rather good deal?"

"That really is a good deal!" Kang Xiaobo finally understood Wei Zhao's intention. "Chief, you really are something. You casually tricked another three hundred thousand out of Kang Zhaoming! That feels fantastic!"

Kang Xiaobo's grudge against Kang Zhaoming had not formed overnight. If Wei Zhao had not been there today, he would never have sat at the same table with Kang Zhaoming. He had spent the whole time wondering why Wei Zhao had arranged things this way. Only now did he realize that Kang Zhaoming had been swindled by Wei Zhao once again.

"I wasn't planning to swindle him at first. I only came along to see what sort of trick he was trying to play this time." Wei Zhao gave a wry smile. "But since he brought three hundred thousand and offered it to us, how could we possibly refuse?"

"Exactly! You nearly scared me to death earlier. I thought we'd actually sold the prescription for three hundred thousand. My heart almost burst!" Kang Xiaobo let out a relieved breath. "Chief, you take the money. I'm going to the shantytown to pick up Xiaofen and take her to the company with me."

During this period, Kang Xiaobo went to the company every day to study under Fatty Lai and his friends. Although he had learned quite a bit of theoretical knowledge, theory without practical application was no more than empty talk. He therefore treasured this opportunity to gain hands-on experience.

The same was true of Xiaofen, though her legs were not very convenient, so she naturally traveled with Kang Xiaobo each day. Her family's house had been demolished, and her mother had rented a place near their new home. Once the new house was finished, they would be able to move in.

"Keep the money. Get a driver's license and buy a car. Otherwise, taking Xiaofen around every day won't be very convenient. Use whatever remains to buy some appliances for her family." Three hundred thousand meant little to Wei Zhao, and he certainly had no intention of carrying a box of cash back to school.

"But... how can I take this?" Kang Xiaobo was startled. He had never imagined that the money might actually be given to him. Although Wei Zhao had accepted it in his name, Kang Xiaobo had known his place and had never coveted it. That was why he had offered to return the money before leaving. He had never expected Wei Zhao to hand it over to him.

"What's wrong with it? Take it." Wei Zhao patted Kang Xiaobo on the shoulder and waved him off, leaving no room for argument.

Wei Zhao was a man who drew a clear line between gratitude and grudges. He treated his friends well and his enemies badly. Even when an enemy had done nothing to provoke him, Wei Zhao would still give them a warning whenever the opportunity arose. Take Kang Zhaoming just now: he had lost three hundred thousand for no reason at all.

Kang Xiaobo had not done much to help Wei Zhao, but Wei Zhao did not care. When Zhong Yongliang had come looking for trouble back then, Kang Xiaobo's willingness to stand shoulder to shoulder with him had already earned Wei Zhao's respect. Friendship was not a matter of taking from one another, so Wei Zhao would never distance himself from Kang Xiaobo simply because Kang Xiaobo could not be of much use to him at present.

"Well... all right, then. Thank you, Chief!" Hearing this, Kang Xiaobo understood that Wei Zhao had made up his mind. He nodded gratefully and clasped the box tightly in both hands once more...
