Chapter 797 — Deliberately Struck?

The Blossom Guardian

"Young Master Ming, though I can't help feeling that this whole business may prove a blessing in disguise!" Wang Shubin shook his head and said to Kang Zhaoming.

"Oh? What's that supposed to mean? Are you saying my broken leg is a good thing?" Kang Zhaoming was dumbstruck, so angry he wanted to swear. What sort of comfort was this? Did Wang Shubin have no idea at all how to console a man?

"Young Master Ming, think about it — didn't you want to suffer some serious external injury?" Wang Shubin said. "Well, look, now you've got one ready-made. And it was an accident, so when the time comes Guan Xin won't suspect a thing!"

"Huh? Now that you mention it, that really is how it is!" At Wang Shubin's words, Kang Zhaoming cheered up at once. "Wang Shubin, you're absolutely right. My leg being broken is a good thing, seen in that light! This time I can go straight to Guan Xin!"

"That's right, Young Master Ming. And Li Cihua said he'd pay you compensation for medical expenses. So not only do you gain an injury to get close to Guan Xin, you get money on top of it — two birds with one stone!" Wang Shubin nodded. "If we'd injured you ourselves, you'd suffer just the same and there'd be no one to pay up!"

"Ha! Then I really am lucky! Gahaha! Today truly is my lucky day — I've got so many things settled, and I get money into the bargain! Wahahaha!" Kang Zhaoming burst out laughing.

The ambulance came screaming all the way to the hospital, and Kang Zhaoming was carried in on a stretcher to the emergency room!

Though Kang Zhaoming's injuries were not light, his heart was still glad. He would have had to suffer in any case; this way he had done it all in a single stroke and given himself a serious external injury, and then he would be able to get close to Guan Xin.

Apart from the fractures in both legs, Kang Zhaoming had no other internal injuries, so the surgery was soon finished and he was wheeled into a ward to recuperate.

"Where's Guan Xin? Why hasn't Guan Xin come yet?" Lying in the ward, Kang Zhaoming was itching to get on with it. "Look, my face is hurt, my legs are hurt — it's this serious, so hurry up and fetch Guan Xin!"

"Young Master Ming, I'll go this instant!" Wang Shubin nodded, thinking to himself that this time Guan Xin surely could not refuse.

So Wang Shubin rushed out of the ward like wildfire to find Guan Xin. However you looked at it, this fell squarely within Guan Xin's area of responsibility.

As it happened, Guan Xin was still in the nurses' duty room. Wang Shubin ran in, and the moment he saw her he was overjoyed. "Nurse Guan Xin, you're here! Our Young Master Ming is injured and desperately needs your help! You see, we don't have a single acquaintance in this hospital — would you please go and take a look?"

Guan Xin had never expected Kang Zhaoming to be so relentless, coming to find her every single day. How could anyone be this tiresome? Would it ever end?

"Is there no other nurse to look after him? I've received no notice about nursing Kang Zhaoming." Guan Xin pointed at her work schedule and explained with what patience she could muster. However irritating Kang Zhaoming might be, she could hardly fly into a rage.

Guan Xin knew she was part of the hospital, and that everything she said and did might affect its image — especially since her father was a shareholder in it. All the more reason to hold herself to a strict standard and give no one anything to gossip about. Even though few people knew her real identity, Guan Xin herself had no wish to smear the reputations of her father and grandfather.

"There isn't any! Young Master Ming is lying in the ward at death's door, and I haven't seen a single nurse come to attend to him. I don't know who else to ask — you're the only person I know here!" Wang Shubin had begun to talk nonsense.

"No one attending to him?" Guan Xin was taken aback. Was it true? Could someone have been negligent? Such things were not impossible; when the hospital took in too many patients at once, a careless doctor or nurse could very well overlook one of them.

Though Guan Xin thought it more likely that Wang Shubin was spinning tales, a human life was at stake. Even knowing it might be a lie, she could not simply turn a blind eye — not out of her duty as a nurse, and not for the sake of the family she represented.

But wasn't Kang Zhaoming only suffering from a cold? And a small cut on his hand? Neither of those ailments was life-threatening.

"Yes, so might I trouble you to go and have a look? See if you can bandage him up first, and then help contact a doctor?" Wang Shubin nodded.

"But he's been in the hospital for days — and only for a cold? What would I be bandaging? That's not my responsibility either." Here Guan Xin changed tack and said with no small irony, "Don't tell me the wound on his hand has flared up again?"

"That..." Only then did Wang Shubin remember that in his haste he had never explained the whole story — no wonder Guan Xin didn't know what was going on. He hurried to explain. "It's like this — Young Master Ming's cold has already healed, and the wound on his hand has healed too. He was discharged today..."

"Then what is there to bandage?" Guan Xin was all the more puzzled.

"After he was discharged, Young Master Ming went to the shantytown on business, but he ran into a developer carrying out a forced demolition there, and in the end it smashed our boss into the hospital — both legs broken, his head cut open too, a truly pitiful sight. Nurse Guan Xin, please go and take a look?" Wang Shubin said in a pitiful voice.

"What?" Hearing Wang Shubin's words, Guan Xin was struck dumb for a moment. Surely not? How could there be such a coincidence? Discharged and then straight back in again? Could Kang Zhaoming have gotten himself struck on purpose?

And no wonder Guan Xin thought so, for the first time she had seen Kang Zhaoming, he had been hale and hearty; yet right after that he had been hospitalized with a cold and come to her for an injection. When he heard she was not responsible for injections, he produced a wound for her to bandage; when he heard the wound was too small to need bandaging, today he turned up with a serious injury!

So Guan Xin could not help wondering whether Kang Zhaoming was deliberately manufacturing all these injuries in order to get close to her. If that were truly the case, then in Guan Xin's eyes Kang Zhaoming was a complete fool! Chasing a girl by mutilating yourself — was there something wrong with his brain? He ought to go see a neurologist, or a psychiatrist.

"Nurse Guan Xin, you're the only person we know in this whole hospital — please, just go and take a look?" Seeing Guan Xin's bewilderment, Wang Shubin hurriedly pressed on.

"Then I'll go take a look." Wang Shubin had made it sound so frightening, and if truly no one was looking after Kang Zhaoming, then Guan Xin really ought to help find someone to treat him — she could not just let him die in the hospital, could she? Though in her heart she rather wished Kang Zhaoming would die and stop pestering her, right now she stood for the hospital, and she could not smear its name over personal feelings.
