Chapter 779 — The True Face of Yu Xiaoke
"What's the matter? Scared now? Your tiny Flying Swallow Sect is no match for our thief gang!" Black Bird Bro was overjoyed to see the frightened look on Wei Zhao's face. "You'd better start thinking about how you're going to make this right. Once our Big Boss gets here, it won't be settled with a million or two!"
"Ah!" Wei Zhao sighed in distress and dialed Qiu Lingshan's number once more.
"Good man, what is it? I'm on my way!" Qiu Lingshan picked up the moment she saw Wei Zhao's name on the caller ID.
She was driving that cheetah-print car alone, with no one else in it.
"Sect Senior Sister, it's bad! The thief gang's Big Boss, Giant Deer Bro, is coming at us with his whole crew. They're going to hack us to death — what are we supposed to do? You have to bring more people!" Wei Zhao said pitifully.
"Don't worry, I'm bringing every single person from my squad who isn't on assignment, and the public security brigade is coming along to support our operation too!" Qiu Lingshan said.
"What? No way, Sect Senior Sister, we've only got a dozen or so people? How are we supposed to stand against them?" Wei Zhao kept up his miserable expression. "You have to find a way to round up some more backup, or we're done for!"
"..." Qiu Lingshan couldn't help but want to laugh. So Wei Zhao had a silly side too? She knew he was only putting on an act to mess with the other side, but she still found it utterly amusing.
"All right, I'll try my best to find more people." Qiu Lingshan couldn't hold back her laughter.
Wei Zhao hung up and said to Yu Xiaoke with a bitter face, "Wife, this is bad. The Sect Senior Sister can only scrape together a dozen or so people at most. What are we going to do?"
"Haha! No need to do anything — you'd better start thinking about how you're going to compensate us!" Black Bird Bro burst out laughing at Wei Zhao's helpless look. "You're killing me. Still trying to call for backup? You don't even have enough of your own people, and now you want outside help? Look at the time — even if they come, it'll be too late!"
"Yeah, what are we going to do?" Wei Zhao sighed.
"Don't worry, maybe the Sect Senior Sister has a plan!" Yu Xiaoke knew Wei Zhao was putting on a show. If he really couldn't find anyone, would he just stand here like an idiot waiting for Black Bird Bro's men to hack him down? Clearly he had something up his sleeve — otherwise, knocking out Black Bird Bro and making a run for it would be child's play for him.
"That's the only way, then!" Wei Zhao nodded.
It had to be said, the thief gang was remarkably efficient — or perhaps their headquarters was simply nearby. Before long, a dark mass of men wielding machetes and iron rods surged in from both ends of Old Tao Alley, surrounding Wei Zhao and Yu Xiaoke in the middle.
Black Bird Bro was overjoyed to see his people arrive. Spotting Giant Deer Bro among them, he scurried over eagerly. "Giant Deer Bro, it's these two — one's Yu Xiaoke, and the other's her man!"
"Oh? What happened to those four brothers on the ground?" Giant Deer Bro glanced at the four underlings howling on the ground and couldn't help but frown.
"That kid's trained in some kind of technique called Iron Armor Body Protection. The brothers threw punches at him, and this is what happened to them!" Black Bird Bro hurried to explain.
"That impressive?" Giant Deer Bro was stunned. He hadn't expected such a technique to exist. Didn't that mean anyone who hit him was asking for trouble?
"Yes, it really is impressive. But according to what he let slip by accident, he's not afraid of being hit — he's afraid of being slashed with machetes!" Black Bird Bro said smugly. "I figure he's immune to blunt force, but sharp blades can still cut and stab him!"
"Mm, that makes sense!" Giant Deer Bro nodded.
While the two were talking, Yu Xiaoke found a moment and quietly asked Wei Zhao, "Hey, did you actually call anyone? They've got so many people — can we handle this?"
"If we can't, we run." Wei Zhao smiled.
"I'm not joking with you. I can't die — if I die, there'll be no one to look after the kids at the orphanage. They'll starve to death!" Feng Xiaoxiao was getting anxious.
"You really steal money for the orphans at the orphanage?" Wei Zhao looked at Yu Xiaoke. From her appearance, she didn't seem like someone who lived extravagantly. With her daily income, she shouldn't have to dress the way she did.
"Of course. If you want to donate, I'll accept that too." Yu Xiaoke said.
"Heh, you could find another way to make money. Stealing all the time isn't good." Wei Zhao didn't exactly have a fondness for thieves, but he didn't despise them either — after all, his own sect uncle was a master thief. It was just that he thought Yu Xiaoke's skills were too poor. With that level of technique, coming out to steal, she was bound to get caught sooner or later.
"What kind of job earns money that fast?" Yu Xiaoke rolled her eyes. "I've got over a hundred mouths to feed every day! Do you have any idea how expensive things are now? Have you ever bought firewood, rice, oil, or salt? Even at ten yuan per person per day for food, that's over a thousand yuan. Add study materials, shots and medicine when the kids get sick, clothes, bedsheets, cups, daily necessities, plus water, electricity, broadband, gas, and cable TV — how can I manage without fifty thousand a month? I'm a young woman — where am I supposed to earn fifty thousand? Selling myself, the first time might be worth something, but after that I probably couldn't even make that much! You really don't know how hard others have it until you've run a household yourself!"
Wei Zhao hadn't expected his words to trigger such a long rant from Yu Xiaoke. But then again, these words had probably been pent up in her heart for a long time, with no one to pour them out to. Now that she finally had someone to talk to, she'd dumped everything out in one go.
Still, put that way, Yu Xiaoke really did have it hard! Fifty thousand a month — there really wasn't any profession that paid that well. And Yu Xiaoke had no particular skills, so it was no wonder she could only come out and steal.
"Doesn't the orphanage get donations from anyone else?" Wei Zhao asked.
"Sure, but three thousand here, five thousand there — what's that enough for?" Yu Xiaoke shook her head and sighed. "Ah!"
Wei Zhao felt a pang of emotion. If everything Yu Xiaoke said was true, then he really did have some admiration for this girl. One person, holding up an entire orphanage — no matter what trade she plied to earn money, it was a noble thing.
"By the way, what was that Iron Armor Body Protection you mentioned earlier? Does that kind of skill really exist? Could you teach it to me?" Yu Xiaoke thought of how Wei Zhao had dealt with those four big men earlier and felt a twinge of envy.
"Do you think that's possible? Even a Golden Bell Shield doesn't have that effect." Wei Zhao shook his head. He'd only made up the name on the spot — the reality was nothing like that at all!
