Chapter 755 — The Sleepless Young Miss

The Blossom Guardian

Wei Zhao cared for her in every conceivable way — better even than her father and Uncle Qing. The young miss, who had grown up wanting for a mother's love, had at last found a happiness of her own; she even thought that, were it possible, she would keep Wei Zhao in the villa for the rest of his days, looking after her and Xiaoshu.

Yet Gu Mengyao knew this was impossible, for there was still Tang Yun in the picture — and that was precisely why the young miss harbored such hostility toward her. She did not believe her enmity sprang from her own feelings for Wei Zhao; no, it was because Tang Yun had stolen away the happiness that belonged to her.

If Wei Zhao left, who would care for her, look after her? Gu Mengyao did not want him to go.

It was only yesterday, when Wei Zhao had looked upon her body, that some delicate new thought stirred in Gu Mengyao's heart: if Wei Zhao were her boyfriend, would he not stay? The idea startled even herself.

Did she like Wei Zhao? Truly? Impossible — it must be that Xiaoshu, that girl, with her endless, idiotic talk of first wives and second wives, had addled her mind and led her astray.

Yet Gu Mengyao truly did want to keep Wei Zhao, did not want him to go — and still she had no idea how to go about it.

Whom could she tell? Shen Yushu? That girl had no filter and an overactive imagination; before Gu Mengyao had even made her meaning plain, it would come out of Shen Yushu's mouth as her pursuing Wei Zhao! Gu Mengyao did not dare.

Just now her father had telephoned to say they would all go out to dinner that evening, to thank Wei Zhao, and Gu Mengyao had idly shot off a text message to him.

Seeing that Wei Zhao agreed, Gu Mengyao at last felt her heart settle.

"Sister Yaoyao? What's the matter with you? You look sort of glazed over." Shen Yushu had been studying her for a good long while.

"Glazed? I don't think so... I probably didn't sleep well last night..." Gu Mengyao shook her head.

"Oh. Then why didn't you sleep well?" Shen Yushu asked.

"Because I'm only just recovering from a serious illness." Gu Mengyao would not, of course, voice her true thoughts.

"Oh. I thought it was because you were missing Brother Arrow." Shen Yushu fixed her with a careful stare as she spoke.

"Why would I miss him? You think I'm you?" Gu Mengyao frowned and turned her head away, refusing to look at Shen Yushu.

"Sister Yaoyao, I've noticed something isn't quite right with you." Shen Yushu said this most earnestly.

"What isn't right now?" Gu Mengyao found Shen Yushu such a nuisance — with nothing better to do, she was forever spotting this and noticing that.

"Hard to say. Let me observe a while longer, then I'll tell you." Shen Yushu thought it over and replied.

"..." Gu Mengyao did not know what to say. "Then keep on observing. I'm going to read."

With that, Gu Mengyao picked up a review workbook and began to read. Shen Yushu stared at her for a while, found nothing amiss, and went back to her own books.

After school that evening, Wei Zhao first drove Tang Yun back to the hospital, and only then made for the Pengzhan Business Hotel. Gu Pengzhan was the host, and naturally this was his first choice.

The Pengzhan Business Hotel seemed unusually packed today; the open-air lot in front had not a single space left, so Wei Zhao had to steer down to the underground garage, which operated on a membership system — only guests holding a Pengzhan Business Hotel member's card were permitted to park there.

When the attendant saw Wei Zhao drive up in a beat-up little van and then produce a diamond card, he was struck dumb on the spot!

Was this some rich man's perverse little hobby?

Wei Zhao paid no attention to the man's expression. In truth, he had no particular urge to go about showing off in this wreck of a van; he simply had a car that ran, and could not be bothered to trade it in. Whenever the thing broke down or got lost, then he would think about getting another.

The elevator from the garage rose straight to the private rooms above — the same room where Gu Pengzhan had hosted him last time — and Wei Zhao knocked.

Soon Uncle Qing opened the door, saw Wei Zhao, and said, "Mr. Lin, you've come."

Uncle Qing's manner toward Wei Zhao had passed from ordinary deference to a deference that rose from the bottom of his heart — and all because of what he now knew of Wei Zhao's strength. Wei Zhao had actually fought Uncle Zhu to a standstill, and now Uncle Zhu lay flat on his bed, while Wei Zhao went about as though nothing whatever had happened!

A man of true strength always earns the respect of others. Uncle Qing was himself a Yellow-tier external-style master, and toward a Mysterious-tier internal-style master like Wei Zhao he was naturally deferential in the extreme; this had nothing to do with Gu Pengzhan — it was simply his own personal respect for Wei Zhao.

"Uncle Qing, I'm late, am I? Sorry to have kept everyone waiting." Wei Zhao smiled as he stepped into the private room.

"Oh, Brother Arrow's here — can I start eating?" Shen Yushu had plainly lost all patience, gazing at the dishes on the table and drooling.

"Xiaoshu!" Gu Mengyao shot her a glare. "No being rude. Why do you look like a starved ghost? Be careful no one ever marries you."

"Oh — if you can find one, so can I." Shen Yushu was utterly unconcerned.

"..." Gu Mengyao was speechless.

"Xiao Yi, come, take your seat!" Gu Pengzhan actually rose from his own chair and went forward to greet Wei Zhao.

Gu Pengzhan was now thoroughly convinced of Wei Zhao's abilities. This time his daughter had escaped danger, and the trouble at the school had been settled to everyone's satisfaction — Wei Zhao deserved the lion's share of the credit.

"Heh, Uncle Chu, please — no need for such courtesy!" Wei Zhao hastily made an inviting gesture of his own. "Uncle Chu, do sit down."

Gu Pengzhan was Wei Zhao's elder, and Wei Zhao naturally would not fail in etiquette.

Seeing her father rise, Gu Mengyao could hardly remain seated either; she took Xiaoshu's hand and stood up alongside her. "Wei Zhao, thank you for yesterday."

"Oh, Sister Yaoyao, no need to be polite — we're all family, after all! You're Brother Arrow's first wife, so of course he had to save you; otherwise he'd have no wife left!" Shen Yushu's mouth was stuffed with a cream steamed bun, and she spoke through it indistinctly.

"Xiaoshu, what absolute nonsense are you talking?" Gu Mengyao was fit to be tied. "Can't a bun shut your mouth? Here — have another!"

Gu Mengyao snatched up a cream steamed bun and forced it into Shen Yushu's mouth.

"Mmf — waah, waah..." Shen Yushu could not get another word out, choking so hard her eyes rolled back.

Gu Pengzhan watched his daughter and Xiaoshu, found the whole thing rather funny, and could not help laughing.

Wei Zhao had long grown used to it. He shrugged. "Don't go stuffing her to death."

Hearing Wei Zhao's words, Gu Mengyao flushed at once; she recalled what had happened last time and felt a small pang of guilt toward Xiaoshu, so she pulled the bun back out of the girl's mouth and set it on the plate beside them.

Gu Pengzhan smiled and waved Wei Zhao to his seat. Wei Zhao sat on Gu Mengyao's left, and Shen Yushu on her right.

Uncle Qing and Gu Pengzhan, for their part, sat facing the three of them.
