Chapter 703 — Defending Happiness
The house had only just begun to feel warm and cozy—how could Gu Mengyao let anyone snatch her happiness away?
As for all that talk about Wei Zhao not being able to see pretty girls at home and going out to sow his wild oats—those were nothing but excuses she used to fool herself. The real reason was the fragile, warmth-starved heart the young mistress had carried with her since childhood.
Like a safe, Gu Mengyao deliberately locked her feelings away. She did not want to admit to the warmth that had come into the house with Wei Zhao; that was the tenderest place deep in the young mistress's heart, and she did not want anyone to know of it.
True, there were times she found Wei Zhao thoroughly annoying, but living under the same roof really was rather nice. If she could, Gu Mengyao wished days like these would go on forever.
But Tang Yun's appearance yanked Gu Mengyao out of her dream and back into reality, shattering it in an instant. Yes—sooner or later Wei Zhao would leave the villa and begin a life of his own. He would have a girlfriend, and a home of his own...
What Gu Mengyao had not expected was that the day would come so soon. So she was full of hostility toward Tang Yun and wanted to drive her away from Wei Zhao's side. She would never allow Tang Yun to destroy her warm home.
She wanted Wei Zhao to make breakfast for her and Little Shu every day. She wanted him to appear the instant she and Little Shu ran into trouble.
So that night, when she saw Wei Zhao injured and saw Tang Yun, Gu Mengyao was furious. By what right? Wei Zhao was part of the villa—by what right was he hurt for Tang Yun's sake? And so the young mistress's first clash with Tang Yun began.
Beset by fury, the young mistress declared war on Tang Yun without engaging her brain.
That declaration of war led to the second clash, at noon in the cafeteria.
Yet Tang Yun's kindness sobered the young mistress at once. Yes—what fault was Tang Yun's? In the beginning it had been Wei Zhao who pursued her, hadn't it? How could she blame Tang Yun? And yet Gu Mengyao truly did not want her to take Wei Zhao away from the villa.
But after what had happened today—after Wei Zhao had seen her body, after she had so mortifyingly wet herself all over him—could things between them ever be the same as before? Would he look down on her? Laugh at her?
And even if he didn't, how could she ever bring herself to face Wei Zhao again?
It was maddening, truly maddening. Gu Mengyao felt she would die of vexation; never in her life had she been so troubled.
So in that moment the young mistress made up her mind: she would treat Tang Yun to a meal, as a gesture of thanks. Whatever happened, after this they would owe each other nothing. The young mistress did not want to be in anyone's debt, least of all Tang Yun's.
How she handled her relationship with Wei Zhao was her own business. She did not want to be constrained at every turn by a debt of gratitude to Tang Yun. The young mistress was a clever girl; she knew the difference well enough.
The young mistress's words left Wei Zhao somewhat taken aback, but after the surprise he took out his phone and dialed Tang Yun's number. In any case, Wei Zhao wanted to ease things between the young mistress and Tang Yun; otherwise, caught between them in the future, he would be in for trouble.
"Wei Zhao? Is everything sorted out on your end?" Tang Yun was delighted to receive his call. She had been waiting in the hospital room all along. Earlier she had wanted to call and ask whether he could still come back that night, but fearing it would interfere with his work and put him in a difficult spot, she had held herself back.
"Yes, it's all taken care of," Wei Zhao said. "I just came out of the inpatient wing."
"Then... can you come back?" Tang Yun hesitated a moment before asking.
"Yaoyao says she wants to treat you to dinner. Why don't you come over?" Wei Zhao asked.
"Gu Mengyao? Treat me to dinner?" Tang Yun was slightly stunned; it seemed almost unbelievable. Why would Gu Mengyao invite her to dinner?
"To show her thanks, I suppose," Wei Zhao said.
"Huh? Thanks?" Tang Yun understood at once—Gu Mengyao was thanking her for calling Wei Zhao earlier and sending him to treat her illness. But Tang Yun still felt a certain hostility toward the young mistress, so she was not keen to go. "I'd better not. It wouldn't be right, would it?"
"You don't want to come? Then forget it..." Wei Zhao could guess what was on Tang Yun's mind. Between her and the young mistress there would surely still be bad blood.
Gu Mengyao wanted to take the phone and speak to Tang Yun herself, but she could not bring herself to do it, so she shot Shen Yushu a look, wanting her to speak on her behalf.
"Yaoyao, look, Tang Yun doesn't dare come, does she?" Shen Yushu blinked and leaned in close to Wei Zhao's phone to say it.
Gu Mengyao was trembling with rage on the spot. That Shen Yushu—she would be the death of her! She had asked her to invite Tang Yun in her place, and instead she said something like that? Wasn't that just carrying on the feud with Tang Yun?
Tang Yun heard Shen Yushu's words on the other end too, and immediately grew a little agitated. "Who says I don't dare come? I'm on my way right now!"
It had to be said that Shen Yushu's goading worked. Whatever else, Tang Yun had made up her mind.
"Let's meet in the parking lot in front of the hospital," Wei Zhao said.
"All right, I'm coming over now." Tang Yun was not about to let Shen Yushu look down on her, as though she were afraid of them.
After he hung up, before Wei Zhao could say a word, Shen Yushu was cheering. "Yaoyao, aren't I amazing? One sentence and I tricked Tang Yun into coming!"
"You! You tricked her into coming, yes, but I meant to thank her. The way you've done it, how am I supposed to thank her now?" Gu Mengyao shook her head helplessly.
"Once she's here, you can thank her. I only tricked her into coming," Shen Yushu said innocently.
Gu Mengyao did not feel like arguing with Shen Yushu either; the more she argued, the worse her headache got. She only asked Wei Zhao, "Did you drive?"
"Little Shu's Beetle. It can barely squeeze in four people," Wei Zhao said.
"Oh. Little Shu and I will sit in the back," Gu Mengyao nodded. "Next time, we'll take the 5."
Wei Zhao nodded. He had not dared to touch the young mistress's car before, but now it seemed she did not mind such things.
"I want to sit in the front! I'll navigate for Brother Arrow Brand—I know a super cool Western restaurant!" Shen Yushu refused to sit in the back. Who knew whether she did it on purpose, to make Gu Mengyao and Tang Yun sit together.
"You can navigate from the back too," Gu Mengyao said.
"I'm nearsighted. I can't see clearly from the back," Shen Yushu shook her head.
"You're nearsighted? Then we won't eat. We'll get you treated right now—we're at a hospital anyway, so a bit of laser surgery will fix it." Gu Mengyao pointed at the hospital behind her.
