Chapter 668 — Can't Be Saved! "All right, I'm hanging up." Tang Yun did not wish to say another word.
"Ha, fine, I understand." Wei Zhao said with a smile.
Wei Zhao was standing right beside Gu Mengyao, so she heard every word of his phone call, and even she wore a look of disbelief; never once had she imagined that Tang Yun would call Wei Zhao and ask him to save her.
The young mistress's heart suddenly ached a little. She was a woman cold on the surface and warm within; even that somewhat aloof, proud temper of hers had been formed over long years in a family like this one, and was hardly a true fault. At bottom she was kind.
So when she heard Tang Yun worrying about her, the young mistress felt a pang of guilt. If she were Tang Yun, would she have sent Wei Zhao to the rescue? She would, wouldn't she? She did not know.
In truth, if their places had been swapped, Gu Mengyao too would have sent Wei Zhao to the rescue. It was like that first time she met An Jianwen again at the amusement park: though she loathed his pursuit of her, when she saw him take ill, she could not stand by and watch him die.
From this, Tang Yun and the young mistress did share something in common: a good heart.
"Thank her for me..." The young mistress wanted to say a word of thanks to Tang Yun before Wei Zhao hung up, but the words would not come. Only after he had hung up did she speak.
"Ha... all right." Wei Zhao nodded. If the young mistress picked on Tang Yun a little less from now on, he would be glad to see it.
While Wei Zhao was on the phone, the parents had not dared interrupt. They had already learned from Guan Xuemin and Gu Pengzhan that the one who had woken Gu Mengyao was this impossibly young man before them. So the instant he hung up, the parents swarmed around him.
"Divine doctor, I beg you, go and look at my child, please? Say whatever fee you like; Chairman Chu can afford it, and my family will pay even if we must sell everything we own!" This parent took Wei Zhao for a miracle worker invited by Gu Pengzhan, and spoke up in haste.
"Yes! Please save our children. We won't let you work for nothing!" said another parent.
"My family runs a company. Not as big as Chairman Chu's, but we have a few million in assets. As long as you save my child, name your price!" said a parent in fairly decent clothes.
"It's not that I won't save them, but that they can't be saved yet." Wei Zhao had a headache; he could only speak the truth.
"Huh?" The parents were all stunned. Even Guan Xuemin and Gu Pengzhan were taken aback, unsure just what he meant. Can't be saved? Wei Zhao did not want to help?
And Uncle Qing, for his part, was secretly guessing: perhaps Wei Zhao really had awakened Gu Mengyao by channeling his own true qi into her. But that sort of thing took a heavy toll on one's own strength, and no one would sacrifice their power to save another unless that person mattered beyond all measure.
Uncle Qing was a master of the external school, with no true qi in his body; yet even if he had any, he would only have spent his own strength to save someone if it were Gu Pengzhan or Gu Mengyao who lay hurt. And now Gu Pengzhan and Guan Xuemin were asking Wei Zhao to save others, plainly putting him on the spot.
"Divine doctor, you can't just stand by and watch them die!"
"Yes, that's hardly the bearing of a divine doctor..."
The parents grew anxious at once, yet dared not say anything too outrageous. After all, Wei Zhao had no obligation to save them. So while flattering him, they pressed him to act.
"I've already said it: it's not that I would stand by and watch them die, but that for now I am powerless to help." Wei Zhao shook his head.
"Powerless? But you already woke Chairman Chu's daughter..."
"Yes, yes, divine doctor, didn't you cure Gu Mengyao?"
The parents did not quite believe him; they thought Wei Zhao simply had no wish to treat them and was making excuses.
"Oh no! Sister Yao has fainted again!" Shen Yushu cried out suddenly, clutching Gu Mengyao's hand in a panic and turning to Wei Zhao: "Brother Arrow, Brother Arrow, come quick, why has Sister Yao fainted again?"
Shen Yushu's cry startled Gu Pengzhan, Uncle Qing, and Guan Xuemin; the parents, too, stared at the once more unconscious Gu Mengyao, at a loss as to what had happened.
"You see for yourselves, I didn't cure her. I only brought her back to consciousness for a short while." Wei Zhao gave a bitter smile, took Gu Mengyao's hand, and felt her pulse. It was extremely weak, much as when he had first seen her; even if a shade stronger, not stronger by much.
The energy within Gu Mengyao's body had been all but consumed; little remained. Fortunately, after she fell unconscious, the energy drained far more slowly than before. Even so, she would certainly not live past tomorrow.
"Huh?" Only now did the parents understand: Wei Zhao had not truly cured Gu Mengyao at all; he had merely woken her.
"Xiao Yi, what's going on?" Guan Xuemin and Gu Pengzhan both looked at Wei Zhao, uncomprehending.
"Brother Arrow, what do we do now? Why did Sister Yao faint again? She'll be all right, won't she?" Shen Yushu was anxious too.
"She'll be fine for the moment, but as for how to treat her, I need to think it over carefully. Would you all please step outside?" Wei Zhao glanced at the parents in the ward. "Once I find a way to treat her, your children's symptoms will naturally be resolved as well."
His words set the parents' minds much at ease; at least Wei Zhao was not washing his hands of them. That being so, they dared not disturb him further. They hurried out of the ward and left him the quiet space to think.
Gu Pengzhan hesitated, then said, "Xiao Yi, shall we go out as well?"
"Hmm... not for now." Wei Zhao shook his head, deeply agitated. Though he had studied poisons and antidotes rather extensively, his practical experience was far too scant; in all his years of training in the wider world, he had rarely dealt with poisons or their cures. So he was armed with a head full of theory, yet felt utterly at a loss where to begin.
Right now he did not know what poison Gu Mengyao had taken, nor where that poison had come from; he could only start from Gu Mengyao herself. If he were the one poisoned, how would the old man treat him?
Wei Zhao knitted his brows and began to recall the old man's methods. As a child he too had been bitten by a venomous insect, his life hanging by a thread; at the time the old man had likewise not known the source of the poison, nor could he judge from the symptoms what poison it was.
That was it. Back then the old man had driven the poison out of his body with acupuncture.
