hat the Heavenly Court, being about to attack the Great Void, had called up the White Emperor's forces. The White Emperor was now leading the gods and demons of his palace to the Heavenly Court, and from the Heavenly Court would go on to the Great Void; the one left behind in the White Emperor's palace was the crown prince, Qingzong. "The Heavenly Court has called up even the White Emperor's troops — is the Great Void truly so hard a bone to gnaw?" The three ancient gods were astonished; exchanging a glance, they said: "Crown Prince Qingzong's strength is supreme, but even he would find it hard to stand against Longshan the Wanderer, the greatest Celestial Master. And with so few troops here, our stay in this place would be anything but safe. Better that we go from the White Emperor's palace to the Heavenly Court." The Second Pillar Ancient God said: "These past days of running for our lives, not a morsel has passed my lips; I am miserably hungry. Let us first find something to eat." At his words the other two ancient gods felt hungry as well, and said: "The Heavenly Court has so many rules; it would be hard to eat our fill there as we please. We may as well borrow a meal from Crown Prince Qingzong." The three ancient gods flew down beneath the White Emperor's palace; below lay a vast continent, formed from the ever-growing soil the first White Emperor had borrowed from the Heavenly Court. The White Emperor's palace sat above this continent, and on the continent lived teeming multitudes, though their days were rather bitter. As the three ancient gods flew through the sky, they suddenly saw a town below; though it was in ruins, its people were many, and at once they flew down and made for it. The divine-ability users of that town, seeing three ancient gods descend, hastily made ready to defend, but the First Pillar Ancient God flew through them in a single breath and they were turned to flying ash. There had been few divine-ability users in the town to begin with; the rest were common folk, who wailed to the heavens and clung to one another. The three ancient gods feasted to their hearts' content; the villagers scattered and fled, but nowhere could they get out. A little girl who understood nothing, her face sallow, starved to skin and bones, clutching in her hand a bone gnawed down to a few stray shreds of meat, tottered forward and held out the bone, and said timidly: "Uncle, eat this. Don't eat us..." The First Pillar Ancient God reached out and caught her in his hand, and chuckled: "Uncle does not eat bones. Uncle eats people." He was just about to swallow the little girl when suddenly a blade of sword-light flashed past; the First Pillar Ancient God stared dully at his severed arm, divine blood spouting. The next moment his brow went cold — a broken sword had entered at the back of his skull and thrust out through the front! The Second and Third Pillar Ancient Gods were startled; then came a great booming thud, as a massive pillar drove into the center of the town, earth flying up, its canopy streaming in the wind.
